A growing share, though, now goes somewhere else — into furnaces and compost windrows that turn the city’s leftovers into electricity and soil. Per person, the picture is sharper. Each Bangkok resident throws away about 1 kilogram a day, against a global average of 0.74 kg (Resilient Cities Network Bangkok waste profile). That composition drives everything downstream. Wet food waste is heavy, it’s messy, and it drags down the calorific value of mixed rubbish — the same tonne of waste yields less heat, and therefore less electricity, when it arrives soaked in yesterday’s tom yum. Sorting isn’t a tidiness campaign. It’s an energy decision.
There’s a second consequence people miss. The organic fraction that hurts incinerator performance is exactly the fraction that performs best in a digester. Separated food waste is feedstock for biogas and composting; mixed into general rubbish, it becomes a liability at both ends of the system.

Where does Bangkok’s waste go each day?
Most of it leaves the city. Roughly 5,000 tonnes a day travel to the Kamphaeng Saen landfill in Nakhon Pathom (Climate Impact Partners). Bangkok’s collection system works on a hub model. District trucks empty household bins, then deliver to one of three large transfer stations, where waste is consolidated into larger vehicles for the trip out of the city. That road journey is the expensive part — and the part energy recovery is meant to shorten.
Running this system isn’t cheap. Bangkok spends about 7.2 billion baht a year on waste management (Resilient Cities Network Bangkok waste profile), most of it on collection and haulage rather than treatment.

How much electricity does Bangkok get from its rubbish?
Three plants, 79.8 megawatts. Once all of Bangkok’s waste-to-energy facilities are running, they will handle 3,700 tonnes a day — around 25–30% of the city’s collected waste (SD Thailand) — for a combined generating capacity of 79.8 MW (SD Thailand).
The first unit has been running since 2016 at Nong Khaem, processing 500 tonnes of waste a day (Xinhua) through a 9.8 MW turbine (SD Thailand). Over its life it has treated 1.68 million tonnes and delivered 636 million kilowatt-hours to the grid (Xinhua).
Put that in household terms. At 300 kWh a month — a fair figure for an air-conditioned Bangkok apartment — 636 million kWh covers roughly 176,000 household-years of electricity. One mid-sized plant, burning what the city was going to bury anyway, has done that quietly for the better part of a decade.
The second Nong Khaem plant is designed for up to 1,600 tonnes a day (SD Thailand). A third facility at On Nut is contracted for no less than 1,000 tonnes daily (Thairath English) and reached first synchronisation with a 115-kilovolt transmission line in April 2026 (Thairath English) — meaning it’s feeding the grid on trial, not yet at full commercial output.
How much waste ends up diverted from landfill depends on who’s forecasting. The plant operator’s figures point to 25–30% (SD Thailand); Xinhua’s coverage of the programme puts it at nearly 40% once all three plants run at capacity (Xinhua). Either way, the majority still goes in the ground.
What does Bangkok’s new 20-baht waste fee mean for your household?
Separate your rubbish and you pay a third as much. Bangkok households that register as waste separators pay 20 baht a month (Nation Thailand), while everyone else pays 60 (Nation Thailand). The ordinance was published in the Royal Gazette on 31 March 2025 (ThaiPublica) and has been collected since October 2025 — this is in force, not a proposal.
Uptake has been substantial. On the city’s live counter, 702,838 households have registered under the separation scheme (Bangkok Metropolitan Administration). Registration runs through the BMA’s app and district offices, and it requires you to actually sort — food waste apart from general rubbish, recyclables apart from both.
Does 40 baht a month change behaviour? On its own, probably not much. Thailand already operates 26 municipal incineration plants nationally (Climate Finance Network Thailand), and the sector counts 34 community-scale waste-to-energy projects totalling 282.98 MW under 20-year feed-in tariff contracts (EXIM Bank of Thailand). Bangkok’s expansion sits inside that wider bioenergy build-out rather than standing apart from it.
On the materials side, the city is targeting a recycling hub able to process 50,000 tonnes of plastic waste a year (Resilient Cities Network Bangkok waste profile). The real constraint is feedstock quality, not furnace capacity. A plant contracted for 1,600 tonnes a day can only perform if what arrives burns well — and that depends on several million people deciding what goes in which bin.
